I mostly write about people. So, a day out of the house, going somewhere people are can often be seen as research.
But, sometimes the people are just getting on with things, the characters are elsewhere. So, you look around.
Centrestage is an amazing facility. Once the old Kilmarnock High School, it has been expanded and renovated. Now it is a theatre, cafe, and pretty much a school for the performing arts. I think it’s also a charity.
So, there I was, having had a lovely lunch... And I looked up!
Look at this ceiling with me!
Concrete slabs, probably topped with a waterproof surface, sitting on steel beams. Hanging from them are the electrics, the heating, the ventilation. Lower still, the lighting in all it's different guises.
So... shelter from the elements, support for the structure, the things that make the space livable, then the ambience, what makes the space worth living in.
None of these things do the whole job.
If all those functions were performed by one person, they would have to be pretty exceptional. And, perhaps, a little lonely.
Families do that sort of thing well. Each bringing their own needs, but also contributing their own unique strengths.
When all of those things together... under one roof, as they say... with no one thing criticising another and each understanding that they would fall on their own... well, that sounds like home to me.
