PLATFORM 5

Julie and I are going away for the weekend (to Durham, to re-write a rotten visit we had there before). I wanted to take a physical book with me for a little relaxation. So, I picked this one.

Why? We'll not because it looks like it was marketed in my direction, but because it's an example of a prompt I bang on and on about in the writing group. (And it looks like a good read.)

Find an eclosed situation, where people with different characters, who might rather be elsewhere, have to talk to each other.

I used the example of a broken lift/elevator. Then I realised that was probably my first thought because it gets used so frequently in movies.

Hilary, from the group, came up with a railway station waiting room in a storm. Andy, from the group, came up with a football team's supporters bus.

Last week, I referred to the play Corrina Corrina, set on a cargo boat

This week it's The People on Platform 5 with its tag-line "Nobody speaks to strangers on the train. But what would happen if they did?"

If you are reading this, then you can probably imagine at least one scenario that fits this template.

Describe it. Start filling it. Then set your characters to talking. If you are lucky, they'll (eventually) write the story for you.
